SA Furniture 2.0 – From tradition to future
1850 – The start of a journey
Our story begins with Johannes Johansson, born May 26, 1821. In 1850, he and his wife moved to the Broholm farm. Here, Johannes saw an opportunity for extra income through wicker chair manufacturing – a decision that laid the foundation for what is today SA Möbler.
Under the Ruder farm he got firewood for his craft, and in the small cottage with two rooms and a kitchen the children helped at the lathe in the evenings and weekends. He sold the chairs himself at markets in Hjo, Skövde and Skara. The response was good and the business grew.
Johannes gradually moved both his family and production to Lillholmen – where we still have our business today, although it looks completely different today.
Early collaborations and technological advances
Emanuel was innovative and advocating collaboration. He formed a joint-stock workshop with three other factories to share machinery. The machines were first powered by kerosene engines and from 1913 by electricity from turbines in the Tidan River.
From 1931, each machine was equipped with its own engine, which increased efficiency and operational reliability. The barn built in 1915 became a joinery workshop in 1932 – another step towards pure furniture production.
1937 – Samuel Andersson takes over
When Samuel took over from Emanuel in 1937, he lived up to his legacy but made his own changes. He introduced birch in dining room furniture and expanded the factory in both 1939 and 1947.
Samuel also gave the company its current name – Samuel Anderssons Möbler.
1950–1970 – Modernization and expansion
In 1959, Samuel's sons Folke and Harald Almestål took over. They built the new brick factory that still stands today, and the company expanded in 1968 and 1974. The focus at that time was on home furniture.
1983 – Kjell Hammar writes the next chapter
In 1983, Kjell Hammar bought the company. With his technical background and experience, he refocused the company on office furniture and public environments .
Back in 1978, Kjell had built his first height-adjustable desk in his garage using parts from windshield wipers and drain pipes – way ahead of his time. The idea became a reality in 1987 with the launch of electric height-adjustable tables through the subsidiary SA Comfortable.
Expansion, innovation and international success
The factory's area more than doubled in 1989 to 9,000 square meters with space for its own metal workshop and upholstery workshop. During the property crisis of the 1990s, the low-cost furniture Konto was launched, a bestseller for schools and home offices.
In 1998, Snitsa® was introduced – a designer piece of furniture with hidden functionality and innovative assembly. Snitsa XL was launched in 2002. Expansion continued with a new assembly hall, showroom and investments in modern production technology.
In 2003, round and oval storage units were introduced by architect Marie Påhlstam, and in 2004, the Index series, inspired by the USA of the 1950s, was launched. The concept of “Quality Office” was born – a symbol of SA Möbler’s quality, knowledge and willingness to innovate.
21st century and beyond – global recognition
Collaborations with, among others, Konstfack and Tengbom Arkitekter resulted in innovative series such as artur and the A series. International ventures in Milan and Germany further strengthened the brand.
In 2014, deliveries to Shanghai opened the door to the Asian market, where our Scandinavian design and long history became a unique selling point.
The power of change
We have faced recessions, pandemics and global competition. Our strength lies in our ability to adapt and evolve without losing our craft heritage.
SA Furniture 2.0 – the next step
Now we stand at a new milestone. SA Möbler 2.0 is the future – a combination of almost two centuries of craftsmanship, tradition and modern innovation.
The foundation is laid by Kjell Hammar's ideas, his eye for design and his unwavering belief that good furniture can change working life . His spirit of innovation is our compass as we now take SA Möbler into the future and create SA Möbler 2.0.
